On Christmas Eve, Saturday December 24th, at 4.00 pm we had, as usual, our crib service designed for kids of all ages, even up to 101. The organist was somewhat chastened to discover that he was probably the oldest person present. Ramona Holt, our lay reader, again took a good service and we were pleased to welcome quite a lot of children. At 11.30 pm we had our so-called “Midnight” communion, actually the first Communion of Christmas, since the celebration took place after midnight. This service was taken by the Rt. Rev. David Lunn, the retired Bishop of Sheffield, now enjoying his retirement in a nearby Wolds village, and at the same time, thankfully for all of us in this benefice, playing a full part in our services. This was the organist’s 30th Christmas service at Kirkburn, and at the Bishop’s special request we had more that the usual 4 carols, in fact we had 6. We are fortunate that both Bishop David and our rector, John Tallant are really interested in the church’s music. Bishop David also took the Christmas morning celebration in our sister church at Garton on the Wolds.
The attendance at our services was down on 2004; we don’t know why and we shall just have to do better next year.
And as another New Year approaches we want to wish everyone a very
peaceful and happy New year. May the love of the Lord be with you and yours always
