Fat people are invisible,
Strange, when they take up so much space!
Eyes sliding past their bodies,
Not looking at their face.
Women are invisible
‘though half the population of earth.
We ignore their constant caring,
And the miracle of giving birth.
Old people are invisible,
‘Though we’ll all be old one day,
We herd them into old folk’s homes,
And don’t listen to all they have to say.
Black people are invisible,
Well, they all look alike!
We don’t see the richness of their culture,
Just a threat we want to fight.
Homeless people are invisible,
We step over them in the street.
We throw them a guilty coin,
And go home to good food and heat.
Poor people are invisible
Like dust under your feet,
Slaving at unpleasant jobs,
Just trying to make ends meet.
At this season of New Year,
Let’s open up our eyes,
It’s the person inside that counts,
