If it was the news and pictures you were eager to see in your daily newspaper in the 1900s they would not be on the front page of your penny broadsheet. No ! This was laid out with classified advertisements. Dozens of them. In a copy of the Hull Daily Mail (incorporating Hull Packet; established 1787 and East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire Courier) dated October 18th 1918, the following examples appeared:
“ Bring or send your old umbrella to us, to be re-covered with a reliable bordered Union
Cloth. All sizes, ladies or gents, price 6sh.11d (six shillings and eleven pence)”
“FOR SALE.
“Dykeing boots for farmers. Government rejects. Quite watertight. Usual price 50/- special offer 25/-. Carriage paid”
“Set of natural fox furs, practically new, beautifully marked.”
“Why not keep rabbits? A quantity for sale, Feed your family cheaply and clothe them with
the skins. To say nothing of having rabbit shooting in your own back garden”
and further down this column
