We are always being told how important it is to take exercise. Think of the numerous celebrities who have made videos of exercise routines in an effort to keep fit and to show the rest of us how to do it. We meet joggers pounding their ways along the roadside; others will try yoga, pilates, and sessions at the gym. Those of us who are less mobile (or less inclined) are made to feel guilty or overweight. So ..... with a spurt of enthusiasm we begin to fling our limbs about, knocking over a few ornaments in the process. We keep up these movements for a few days, after which, with strained muscles and an aching body we give up. Housework and gardening are usually all the exercise Mr. and Mrs. Average can cope with. Plenty of bending and stretching doing these tasks.
Living on the edge of the village means it is quicker for me to use the car to reach the shop and post office. It is far enough to manage the walk to Church, but on one occasion I decided
a walk to the shop would do me good - overlooking the fact that I would be walking back plus shopping. Nearly home, short of breath, one leg goes into spasm, --- come one !! Best foot forward, -- this is doing me good.... remember ?? On reaching home the postman had been, and, as if to pile on the agony a letter arrived inviting me to join the Ramblers’ Association. Very kind of them, but I think not .
Apart from the exercise we ought to take, it seems we don’t eat the right kind of food to keep us healthy. At the time of writing this, we are informed that bacon sandwiches can cause cancer. Eating plenty of fruit and veg.. is O.K.. so long as we wash it well to remove the spray with which it is treated. It makes me wonder how the people of my generation have
survived as long as they have. I don’t remember obese people during the war when we existed on our rations , and when children did not know what bananas and oranges looked like.
And, to make you laugh......... from a church magazine,
“The vicar would appreciate it if the ladies of the congregation would lend their electric girdles
for the pancake breakfast next Sunday”
“The concert held in the church hall was a great success. Special thanks due to the Minister’s daughter, who laboured the whole evening at the piano which, as usual, fell on her”
At the evening service tonight, the topic of the sermon will be “What is Hell”. Come early, and hear our choir practice. The senior choir invites any member of the congregation who enjoys sinning to join them
and finally
A little boy was saying his prayers in a very low voice. “ I can’t hear you, dear” his mother whispered. “Wasn’t talking to you” said the young one firmly
