2004 at KIRKBURN ST. MARY (continued)
April 11 Easter Sunday
This great day in the Christian Calendar was celebrated
at St. Mary’s with a service of Holy Communion presided
over by the Reverend Ron Duffield. There was a good
attendance on this “day of obligation”, the Easter Hymns
as always, are magnificently singable, and the congregation was in tremendous voice. Christ is risen
indeed. To celebrate this special day, pieces of seasonable chocolate tiffin and Easter biscuits were served. Easter
at St. Mary’s not only celebrated the risen Lord but was a notable social event - a real Christian celebration.

May 30 Whitsunday
Another great day for Christians. The day when the Holy
Spirit manifested himself to the first Christians; a celebration of the power of the spirit in the life of ordinary people today, over 2000 years later. The service in Kirkburn church was a benefice service presided over by the Right Reverend Bishop David Lunn, previously Bishop of Sheffield, and assisted by our own Rector. Rev. John Tallant, who preached a powerful sermon. Representatives of all 6 Woldsburn churches were in the congregation Our service ended with a sharing of coffee and biscuits.
Speaking with tongues was certainly in evidence during this social time, but fortunately for everyone’s understanding, on this occasion, only in English.

June 19 Plant Sale
Disaster struck. The mowers used for cutting the grass in the churchyard all failed for one reason or another, generally antiquity. Mr. Roger Parkin of Nafferton generously gave the church a Honda mower which is most useful. However, to effectively cut the grass in the long swathes between the gravestones a mower with a larger cut, costing about £1000, is required. On the initiative of Judy Adamson, our deputy church-warden, a plant sale was arranged. A surprising number of plants in many varieties were forthcoming, an appeal to the parish brought forth an equally amazing number of cakes, and this coupled together with refreshments, a raffle, and other items raised what we think is a brilliant sum of over £401 towards this appeal.
