2004 at KIRKBURN ST. MARY (continued)
25th November 2004   QUIZ NIGHT
Mine hosts of the Queen’s Head, the only pub in the parish,
hosted our quiz night and  even more kindly provided the first prize of Sunday lunch for 4 people at their well known restaurant.   The rooms were crowded and the quiz, ably prepared and presented by Richard Burdass, was very well received and brought a great deal of pleasure to all participants,
John Tallant, our Rector, turned out for his first church social  occasion since his accident,.  We were all delighted to see him.   He shared a table for an hour with my wife and myself, and he made a notable contribution to our score until he was forced to leave.   After that there were just the two of us on a table for four,  and we went down hill rapidly. I think we ended up eventually as 5th equal, so we didn’t disgrace ourselves.  The whole night was really very pleasant ;  the questions were interesting and varied, and the tables competed very good naturedly.  The event resulted in a welcome addition to church funds, and into the bargain, was a very well received social occasion
Christmas 2004 at Kirkburn church
From the beginning of Advent we were a little dis-advantaged by the absence of our Rector following his road accident.   We were determined that our Christmas services should go well.   We were lucky to have some support from our local press, the Driffield Times and Post, who published in the week before the event,  our intention to change the format of our  Carol service from the usual “Kings College, Cambridge” type service to a more modern format, including non-ecclesiastical readings (John Betjemann, Thomas Hardy et al).  In the event we were amazed at the response;  the service was held by candlelight at 4 pm  Sunday 19th December.   The church looked absolutely beautiful;  the  organist, practicing before the service was pleased to have the company of Trish Megginson and helpers decorating the church.   As usual the magnificent Christmas Tree bedecked in white lights emphasised the beauty of the Church even by normal lighting.  On the day of the service which began when darkness had fallen it is almost impossible to describe the beauty and the atmosphere in this historic building.  We were even more
