Grass areas to be enhanced were cut hard, then scarified. Four sources of seed were used
(1) Green Hay from our Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) at
Bishop Wilton Poorlands
(2) Green Hay from Wharram Percy Quarry
(3) Hay - Hackness Meadow
(4) Traditional Meadow Seed
These seed were strewn about, then rolled with a sheep’s foot roller, one with small bumps on it, just as if animals feet were walking on the field.
IN JUNE AND AUGUST 2005
The perennial weeds west of the Lychgate were removed, and the ground was scarified. That land was then rolled, the woodland was cleared of compost, nettles etc.. This area was sown with local seed,
JULY 2006
Yellow rattle seeds were collected.
AUGUST 2006 The meadow was cut when dry, then raked to scatter the seeds.
The moss in some parts was ripped up and collected, then oversown with local provenance meadow seed, and the yellow rattle seed added.
SEPTEMBER 2006
We intend to plant a wooded area with locally sourced Beech and Flowering Cherry, underplanted with spring bulbs and woodland species.
