4th Sunday of Lent
Mothering Sunday, as it has been since years , is the day when people remember their mothers, and in former days returned to their home villages to join their families and to worship on the 4th Sunday in Lent at their “mother” church.. And so it was in Kirkburn in this year of our Lord 2005. Our service on this notable occasion, when the first daffodils, the Easter flower, were just beginning to bud, in preparation for that greatest Christian festival of all, Easter, the resurrection day, was taken by our rector, John Tallant and with a good congregation. Mothering Sunday is a happy occasion and, as is usual in Kirkburn Church, primroses and primulas in pots were given to all present at the service to give to their mothers. or in memory of their mothers. Some members of the congregation took two pots for particular reasons, and I know for certain that one pot was taken to give to a lady in a nearby village who has already reached the age of 100 years and is still as bright as a button. Her daughter lives abroad and visits as often as is possible, but I am sure that a pot of primroses will have brought her a lot of pleasure on Mothering Sunday.
